Congratulations to Jacob Abel for receiving the President’s Award for the best student oral presentation at the 96th Annual Southeastern Branch ASM Conference held in Montgomery, Alabama, on November 5-6, 2010. Jacob’s presentation, entitled “Investigating Roles of DNA Curvature and Sequence Periodicity in Prokaryotic Chromosomes and Plasmids and Phages,“ won the first place in the area “Antimicrobial Agents, Microbial Communities and Genomics, Bioinformatics and Detection.” Jacob, a microbiology major, will graduate in 2011 and plans to pursue a career in medical research. Well-deserved recognition extends to Jacob’s mentor, Dr. Jan Mrazek, Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Bioinformatics in UGA’s Department of Microbiology. Research in Dr. Mrazek’s laboratory centers on computational microbiology and comparative analyses of microbial genomes.
