Founded in 1952 in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia, the Department of Microbiology has enjoyed sustained growth and has developed an international reputation in prokaryotic biology. We have approximately 40 faculty affiliates who lead vigorous and innovative research programs in a wide variety of areas of microbiology. Our research mission is to expand our knowledge of the physiology, genetics, and ecology of microorganisms. We maintain internationally recognized research programs in microbial physiology and genetics, cell biology, bacterial pathogenesis, microbial ecology and evolution, protein biochemistry, biotechnology and bioinformatics. Our teaching mission is to prepare our students for their chosen professions by fostering independent learning, critical thinking, imagination and curiosity. Rigorous coursework and original research are incorporated into the graduate and undergraduate curricula, and help prepare our students for careers in health-related professions, academia, biotechnology, industry, government, and other job sectors.
