Short and Sweet: The 3-Minute Research Showcase

To help students get the scope of their current research project, the Microbiology department requires current students enrolled in a directed research course (4960R/4970R/4980R) to submit either a one page summary of your research project progress or a three minute oral presentation at mid-semester.

The Microbiology Department will host the 3-minute oral presentation as a competition on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 4:00pm in Coverdell room N104. Those wishing to participate will need to prepare one slide detailing their research's purpose.

There will be awards given for best oration (well-articulated presentation) and best concept (clearest description of significance, methodology, and impact of research) for oral presentations.

Find additional information on this type of competition here:

Guidelines for the one-page summary, if chosen instead of a presentation, will be sent to those who indicate their preference.  The deadline for the one-page summary is Monday, October 7th, 11:59 PM.

Rules for the Oral Presentation

  • Presentations are limited to three minutes maximum and competitors exceeding three minutes are disqualified.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (i.e. no poems, raps, or songs).
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when presenters start their presentation through movement or speech.
  • Presentations are to be given at the monitor where slide is projected
  • A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted (no slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ of any kind) and is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files).
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.
