Some suggested upper level electives (some of these courses may be counted as a MIBO or science elective instead of a general upper level elective): CBIO (MIBO) 4100 (Immunology), CBIO 3400 (Cell Biology), MIBO 4700 (Medical Mycology; not offered on a regular basis), VPHY 3100 (Elements of Physiology), BCMB 4120 (Human Biochemistry and Disease), BCMB (GENE) 3433 (Biology for Medicine), CBIO 3000 (Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy),  CBIO 3300 (Developmental Biology), CBIO 3710 (Principles of Physiology), CBIO 3800 (Neurobiology), CBIO 4340 (Biology of Aging), CBIO 4500 (Medical Parasitology), CBIO 4730 (Endocrinology), GENE 4070 (Evolutionary Medicine), EHSC (MIBO) 4310 (Environmental Microbiology), POPH (MIBO) 4650 (Introduction to Virology), ECOL (BIOL) 4150 (Population Biology of Infectious Diseases), EPID 4070 (Fundamentals of Epidemiology), ENTO 3650 (Medical Entomology), GRNT 3000 (Aspects of Aging), HPRB 3020 (Foundations of Health Promotion Professional Practice), HPRB 3700 (Community Health), HPAM 3600 (Introduction to Health Policy), IDIS (POPH) 3110 (Food Animal Infectious Diseases),  IDIS 4390 (Clinical Diagnostic Microbiology), PBHL 3100 (Introduction to Public Health). Some professional programs either require undergraduate research or recommend it for admittance. Undergraduate research can be done in any one of a number of departments, but require permission of the department (POD). See FAQ under Undergraduate Advising for suggestions on how to find a lab for undergraduate research.

Choose one (1) course from: MATH 2260, CSCI 1210, CSCI 1301/1301L, STAT 2000, STAT 2100H, BIOS 2010/2010L, BINF(BCMB) 4005, PBIO(BIOL)(BINF) 4550, or GENE 4220L

Choose two (2) courses from the following MIBO electives: CBIO(MIBO)(IDIS) 4100, MARS(MIBO) 4620/4620L, MIBO(POPH) 4220, MIBO 4300 (not offered on a regular basis), EHSC(MIBO)(FDST) 4310/4310L, POPH(MIBO)(IDIS) 4450/4450L, MIBO 4500, POPH(MIBO)(IDIS) 4650MIBO 4680, or MIBO 4700 (not offered on a regular basis).

Choose from: MIBO 4600L (Experimental Microbiology Lab), BCMB 4030L/6030L (Lab Techniques in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), BIOL 3110L (Basic Skills in the Laboratory), BIOL(CBIO) 5050L/7050L (Electron Microscopy Lab), BTEC(BCMB)(PBIO) 4000L (Methods in Biotechnology), CBIO(BIOL) 3410L (Laboratory in Cellular and Developmental Biology), GENE(BIOL) 4210L (Molecular Genetics Lab). Students can also use Senior Thesis (MIBO 4950) or Honors Thesis (MIBO 4990H) courses to satisfy the lab intensive requirement. Students using MIBO 4950 or MIBO 4990H to satisfy the lab intenstive requirement are required to complete at least two semesters of undergraduate research in microbiology (two semesters of MIBO 4900L or MIBO 4960H and MIBO 4970H) prior to taking MIBO 4950 or MIBO 4990H.

Choose one (1) course from: any 3- or 4-credit hour, 3000/4000- level course in BCMB, BIOL, CBIO, ECOL, GENE, or MIBO (includes undergraduate research courses and courses cross-listed with MIBO), MARS 3450/3450L, MARS(FISH) 4380/4380L, MARS 4810, ENTO 3140/3140L, ENTO 3650/3650L, ENTO 4000/4000L, PSYC 4120, PSYC 4130, IDIS 4390/4390L, or VPHY 3100*.

*Many pre-medical students take VPHY 3100 to prepare for the MCAT. CBIO 2200 and CBIO 2210 (Anatomy and Physiology I and II) provide excellent coverage of human anatomy and physiology (perhaps more so than VPHY 3100). Unfortunately, these courses do not count as upper level electives or satisfy the science elective for the B.S. in Microbiology.
